This week, WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich talks about two very important, and yet very different, topics: The cicada emergence and a destructive severe thunderstorm in Rock Hill, South Carolina.This year will have the return of two different broods of cicadas, the Periodical Cicadas, also known as Brood XIX or Brook 19. Chris Jackson is a South Carolina-based storm chaser and a trained first responder. On April 13, 2020, he chased severe weather as it raced across his home state. The early morning event was a continuation of what became known as the Easter tornado outbreak of 2020, which caused damage across much of the South before coming into the Carolinas. In South Carolina, there were 5 EF-3 tornadoes, 2 EF-2 tornadoes, and 1 EF-1 tornado in Central South Carolina and East-Central Georgia, causing 2 fatalities and at least 7 significant injuries. NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) has provided manual translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish for the past 30 years, but now the agency has a new tool to be more accurate, efficient and equitable.  Through a series of pilot projects over the past few years, NWS forecasters have been training artificial intelligence (AI) software for weather, water and climate terminology in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, the most common languages in the United States after English. NWS will add Samoan and Vietnamese next, and more languages in the future.  Two of the nearly dozen locations where these AI-translated severe weather bulletins are being tested are in the Carolinas. It's been three years since the Carolina Weather Group first talked with Richard Neal, the owner of the decommissioned Frying Pan Shoals Tower off the coast of North Carolina. James Brierton and Shea Gibson caught up with Richard recently during the Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon. Frying Pan Tower is located 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina and rises 135' above the Atlantic Ocean. It helps provide safety to Mariners in the Atlantic Ocean, is used for environmental research and education studies, and is a shelter to a natural ecosystem for marine wildlife. Its location makes it a prime spot to observe tropical weather off the Carolina coast, including a direct hit by Hurricane Irene in 2011. The Carolina Weather Group recaps Tuesday's severe weather across the states and looks ahead to another severe weather threat for Friday. On January 9, 2024, a powerful storm brought severe thunderstorms to North Carolina and South Carolina. High winds outside of thunderstorms caused tree and power line damage starting late morning on Tuesday. Winds along the Carolina coast, including New Bern, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston, peaked near 100 mph. Severe thunderstorms with a risk of damaging straight-line winds and tornadoes also occurred. Powerful tornadoes struck locations such as Bamberg County, South Carolina, and the Claremont area of Catawba County in North Carolina. Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding. More severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for both North Carolina and South Carolina on Friday. An emerging weather pattern will bring a chance of winter weather, including ice, snow and sleet, to portions of North Carolina Friday night into Saturday. The best chance of wintry precipitation will be in the mountains of western North Carolina, including Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock and Hickory, but could also spill over into portions of the Piedmont and Triad, including Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. Our 12-hour Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon had lots of plans. Lots of meetings. Lots of choreographing. And yet we still knew: It's live for 12-hours. Expect the unexpected. For me, as the technical director, the hour that stands out the most was the 4 p.m. eastern hour, when through a series of unexpected events, three big guests ended up live at the same time. The hosts that hour came from our friends at the WeatherBrains podcast. As the first weather podcast, they have a lot of great connections and friends. Among others, they had arranged for visits from the Weather Channel's Jim Cantore and Mike Bettes. They had also arranged a conversation with Ken Graham, the National Weather Service director. But the three weren't scheduled to appear at the same time. And yet, it happened. It was a memorable moment for me.
